When & Where Did Coupons Come From?

Coupons are nothing new; they have been around since the year 1887.  The first company to ever release a coupon for a product was Coca-Cola (you may have heard of them).  They were the first company to use coupons to “get their customers hooked”.   According to Coupon Sherpa, the businessman Asa Candler was brainstorming and invented that very first coupon.

Since that faithful day, nearly every company uses coupons to entice customers into buying their brand.  We see service based product coupons on sites like Groupon.com and Livingsocial.com.  These type of websites made it easy for businesses like cleaning services, beauty/skincare boutiques, and many other service-based companies to get their coupons out to huge audiences.

Then we have product coupons, which today seem to pop up literally everywhere.  They are in print, online, advertised on the radio and television and even appear in ads before a Youtube video. Personally, when I think back to the first time I saw a product coupon it was in the grocery store when I was probably about 6 years old.  I used to take the flyer when I walked in with my mom and go find the stuff on sale inside the flyer.  It was kind of like a treasure hunt when I was seven years old.

Fast forward to my late teens and early 20s, those same flyers became my lifeblood.  Being a broke college student for four years I looked for whatever was on sale in those flyers that looked edible.  During my college years, I also discovered online coupon sites such as coupons.com and smartsource.com.  Today you can even get apps on your phone and the coupons can be scanned right from the app.

Coupons have continued to evolve over the years and I have no doubt that coupons will continue in the future.   Who knows what format coupons will displayed in next…
